Lt. Gov Candidate Matt Murphy Visits Salem
1/22/2010
Lieutenant Governor Hopeful Matt Murphy stopped in Salem briefly this week to discuss a plan for Illinois to cut spending, create jobs and reduce debt.
The plan is a joint effort between Murphy and his runningmate Andy McKenna who is seeking the Governor's office. Murphy says the pair are pushing a balanced budget and spending freeze to help combat some of the problems plaguing the state. He says additional steps will also improve the business climate. "If we could phase out the second corporate income tax, it sends a message to the job creators that we value them," he says. "We need work comp reform to bring premiums down."
Murphy says reforming healthcare can also lower the cost of business as well. He says when Illinois has it's "house in order," it will sell itself to businesses. "Come and take advantage of all the good things we have," he says "A workforce that's among the best in the county, the fact we're a central transportation hub and a diverse economy." The McKenna-Murphy plan also includes modernizing the state's pension liabilities through an alternative benefit system and the consolidation of duplicate state programs.
